"Cortisol Switcharoo" Part III: Aging Prematurely and How to Heal
Hopefully you've read Sara Gottfried's articles on the widespread effects of cortisol. This week, she talks about how the 'cortisol switcharoo' actually shortens your telomeres.
Translation, you get older, faster!
I've heard from several people who have said they can completely relate and see themselves on the cortisol 'roller-coaster'.
So, what do you do about all of this?
Here's what worked for me and many of my clients.
You need to first find and address the internal stressors such as toxins, food sensitivities, negative emotions, gut flora imbalances, parasites, bacteria, yeasts, leaky gut, viruses, and other infections.
Through Functional lab tests, I, personally, found infections (Blastocystis hominis- parasite), SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth), a yeast overgrowth, a bowel dysbiosis, leaky gut, nutrient deficiencies, and methylation/detox issues (MTHFR SNP).
My healthy, gluten and dairy-free diet was full of gut irritants and inflammatory foods such as night shades, legumes, gluten-free grains, eggs and seeds (and nuts- tho I wasn't eating any). I ate Autoimmune Paleo- mostly organic- and lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks.
You also need to give up coffee and alcohol, at least for a month.
Much to my dismay, this was probably the most difficult task. I craved coffee in the morning and then I craved wine at night when I'd be making dinner. It took about 30 days for the intensity to diminish and then I began not even thinking about it, except for once in a while. Progress! The major positive effect here: my sleep quality improved immensely and my energy was even all day!
All of the above had contributed to my "Stage III Adrenal Fatigue" and the fact that I was no longer producing much cortisol, at all and therefore felt exhausted all the time.
Additionally, it is important to address the external stressors such as negative people or people that make you feel drained, unhappy work situations, financial stress, negative self-talk, over-exercising, EMF’s, and not taking time for rejuvenation, connection with other humans, nature or self-expression.
Some aspects of the external stressors are in your control. Some are not. Sit down and make note of what you truly do not need to do or commit to. What or who are you saying 'yes' to to make other people happy or stroke your ego? Saying 'no' more often can free you of unnecessary stress and responsibility.
It is imperative change your lifestyle because most of us have let our life get out of hand. Make it a priority to get to bed before 9:00, gently move your body every day, meditate every day, start a gratitude journal and fill your book shelves with uplifting books. Take social media breaks and stop watching TV at night.
If politics are stressing you out, take a break! You know who you are voting for and you will not change anyone's mind by arguing on Facebook.
Take baths, visit a float tank, go to yoga, get a massage, and make a moment to moment commitment to shift your thought patterns.
We live in an unsustainable world where we commit to too much and don’t take care of ourselves. We eat fake food and we eat it fast, often on the go. We stay up too late at night vegged out on the TV. We get addicted to social media. We don’t let ourselves experience our healthy emotions and we don't curb our negative thought patterns. We don’t make time to connect with the people who matter to us.
It is no wonder we are walking around out of balance and aging prematurely!
