"Cortisol Switcharoo": Part II- no motivation, depressed and can't sleep

I hope you got the chance to read Sara Gottfried's post about Cortisol. She explains the whole process and what to do about it so well! Last week I told you about my wired, tired feelings, weight gain and inability to sleep, despite being soooo tired all day. Here's Part II of the story: All of the fatigue, hair falling out, and inability to sleep had made me quite depressed and lacking motivation. It was sooooo hard to get the mundane aspects of my life taken care of, like laundry and cleaning nasty toilets. Most of it just didn't get done unless my husband stepped in and did it. I could tell my hormones were out of whack, but wasn't quite sure what to do about it. Something HAD to change. Around this time, I was diagnosed with hypothyroid. I bet you didn’t know that chronic stress, or high cortisol, decreases signaling to your thyroid, making you hypothyroid. I was desperate at the time and went on Synthroid. I immediately felt like a million bucks! I got my energy back, I could sleep, my neck pain went away, I got my libido back and I thought I had solved the problem….but, it didn’t last long. Pretty soon, I was back to my tired, irritable self. I hadn’t taken care of the source of the problem. My very healthy diet was inflaming me and I hadn’t changed my lifestyle at all. I had never addressed the stressors in my life nor the internal stressors I would later find. Around the end of 2015, testing revealed I was in adrenal exhaustion, or 'Phase III Adrenal Fatigue'. There is no stage IV, if you were wondering. My cortisol levels had bottomed out leaving me exhausted and unable to handle stress. The littlest upset would throw me in an adrenaline tizzy. Thanks to my additional hormonal imbalances (estrogen dominance), I would obsess about the littlest things for days, making matters worse. It's been a major learning curve understanding how all of this fits together and realizing I needed to make major dietary and lifestyle changes in order to turn this around. I had to dig deep to discover what factors caused me to spiral out of balance, in the first place- more on this in Part III, coming next week. For more information, read the next installment of Sara Gottfried's article, "Cortisol Switcharoo (Part 2): How to Right-Size Your Cortisol When It's Bringing You Down". Again, it is full of practices to help remedy the hormone roller-coaster. Being a Harvard trained M.D.- specializing in hormones, a scientist and a yoga teacher, she is a smart woman! If you are seeing yourself in this story, know that you can turn all of this around. The sooner you tackle hormonal imbalance, the quicker you will heal.
