"Cortisol Switcharoo": Why You Feel Fat, Tired and Irritated

Sometimes when I'm stressed out I put cilantro on my head and radishes on my shoulder... and then I take a deep breath.

Kidding!

We’ve all heard about what stress does to us. We have this vague idea that it is bad for our health, our moods, our blood pressure. It’s kind of this old, nagging idea we all know about, but can’t avoid and we think if we ignore it long enough, it will go away.

It was not until I was trained in Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® that I fully understood the massive impact stress and cortisol levels have on our brain, our digestion, our hormones, our immune system, our nervous system, our energy levels and aging.

You see, three years ago, I hit a wall.

I was tired, but wired all the time. I would drink a cup of coffee in the morning, have about 20 minutes of bliss- I felt positive, I wanted to get stuff done, I would have all of these ideas, and then I would crash. My brain felt foggy, I felt anxious, tired (but still wired), and my blood sugar would crash leaving me light-headed.

I had no energy after 2 pm and the evenings felt like this marathon of trying to find the energy to feed the kids and put the kids to bed. Plus, I was irritated at my kids all the time! I would blow up at them and then feel so guilty. I knew better, but couldn’t control my anger and irritation.

I drank wine every night to entertain myself and it felt like ‘self care’ because it was the only thing I did for ME in the day.

I was cold all the time, in chronic pain, and my hair was coming out in massive volumes.

The worst part was, I couldn’t sleep. It would take me up to 2 hours of lying in bed to fall asleep each night and then I would wake up 2-3 times a night. Sometimes not falling back asleep for 1 hour. It was so frustrating being so tired, yet not able to sleep.

I also gained 15 pounds. For those of you who know me, I’ve always been underweight. The first 10 pounds were welcomed. I felt better in my skin. But those last 5 pounds meant my clothes didn’t fit and I felt inflamed. I had the proverbial 'muffin top' and I had a half dozen people congratulate me on the ‘bun in the oven’.

Have you had this happen to you? It is not a confidence-booster.

There's more to my story, but you'll have to tune in to part II next week. For now, read this blog post by Dr. Sara Gottfried on Cortisol and how it steals our vitality and what to do about it, Cortisol Switcharoo: How the Main Stress Hormone Makes You Fat and Angry. She is sure to entertain! Plus, being a Harvard trained M.D.- specializing in hormones, a scientist and a yoga teacher, she is a smart woman!

She also gives you 7 Practices to de-stress and feel better!

Happy reading!
